Years and Years of Doing

Years and years of doing

what you had to do

but when forty-three years

were through,

was there anything left

to say or do

that you were here

or is it fair to say

that you are through

and there is nothing

left to do

but say adieu

or toodledo

to everyone else and

also to

you?

  1. I love this piece … it’s a question that’s been rolling around in my head and heart since retirement. I’m glad to write as much as I do, but life is mostly like this … when it’s done, it’s done, and sooner or later, it’s really done, and so are we. And few will be the memories. Of what value am I right now? Could have answered that question concretely for 43 years, I suppose. But maybe that wouldn’t have been the right answer anyway. Thanks for this thoughtful piece … will share it.

  2. Yes, only a handful of folks rate the history books. Only a handful rate memorials in clubs or organizations or the military. The rest of us live on in the memories of those who loved us for one reason or another…so reserve your space in memories by loving, helping, teaching and doing the best you can.
