The evangelical having spouted certitude
on matters beyond this life,
anxiously pleaded for mercy
from the Grim Reaper’s scythe.
Looking right into death’s open door,
“After this turbulent, troubled life,”
the agnostic mumbled, “No more;
eternal nothingness and blessed silence
might be just right.”
Thanks for this … a simple reminder, I suppose, that honesty is always the best course, and that evangelicalism thrives, not on honesty, but on pretense and hoopla. And when push comes to shove, much of what the evangelical believes collapses. There are honest evangelicals, but, sadly, the words “honesty” and “evangelical” are mostly polar opposites these days.
