We’re Running Out

We’re running out of body bags;
it might as well be spring,
I’d say that I had spring fever
But I know it isn’t spring
I am starry-eyed and vaguely discontented
Like a nightingale without a song to sing
Oh, why should I have spring fever
When it isn’t even spring?
We’re running out of body bags,
it might as well be spring.
Maybe you have COVID-19 fever
while you know it isn’t even spring.
You are starry-eyed with a persistent cough
like a nightingale without a voice to sing;
maybe you have COVID-19 fever
while it might as well be spring,
and it is and the cry for air is just the same
while it might as well be spring,
which it is and I’m no longer
starry-eyed and vaguely discontented,
I’m about to be intubated this spring
in the distant hope of life being incubated this spring.
And we are short on body bags;
be sure mine to bring.
