They drove the back roads home
from Chicago, memories, history —
the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s.
He loves the Red Arrow,
the Blue Star and 12 and 20 —
memories a plenty.
Mom and dad and a stop at
the House of David baseball game,
it’s all gone but behind the wheel,
right there just the same.
He thought old Route 66 was fine
but there is nothing like
the memories on the roads
along the South Shore Line.
What a delight to read … when we lived in Detroit, and J in Chicago, after a visit there, we’d sometime take the old road home, and then swing north to 96 … always fun, seeing vestiges of the past … sometimes sad, decrepit remains of gas stations, lunch counters … old motels …
